Dear Friends:

There is a lot going on during the month of December at Sew Steamboat. We are hosting a Holiday Ornament Contest this year, where you may bring in your hand-made ornament(s) to be judged. Many prizes are being awarded in the categories of Fiber, Fabric, Kids’ and Others’.  Be sure to drop off your entries by 5pm on December 16th; winners announcement will be made during Sit N’ Stitch event on December 18th, 4-6pm. As the holidays approach, we are excited to be offering many classes for kids. Lynn will be teaching several sewing classes for beginning kids’ sewers as well as advanced. Kids can build their sewing skills by registering in all classes during this holiday. Additionally, there will be a Kids Learn to Crochet class by Avery on Saturday, December 5th. For adults, we have the Intro to Knitting classes every first Tuesday and third Sunday of the month. La is offering a Brioche Knitting Technique class on December 19th, which you should not miss!

See you very soon!

(Sew Steamboat will be closed on Monday, December 7th for a Partners’ Retreat/Meeting; Friday, December 25th; and Friday, January 1st, 2016.)

Happy Holidays!

Herriot Fine by Juniper Moon Farm

Sew-Steamboat-JuniperMoon-Herriot-FineI have a confession...I'm a sucker for alpaca yarn!  I knew when this yarn came in I was going to buy it and make something luscious with it.  Herriot Fine by Juniper Moon Farm is 75% alpaca and 25% polyamide (nylon for durability), and it's made in Peru.  This 461-yard skein has enough to make a really soft pair of socks, a beautiful shawl, or what I'm making, a "wrap with sleeves".  The pattern I chose is on Ravelry: Mossery Cardigan by Pamela Wynne.  It has a very pretty lace detail along the bottom edge, up one side and the entire back!  I am using the denim blue color, and I can't wait to see it completed.  Due to the alpaca content, Herriot Fine has a soft "halo" affect (i.e. a little fuzzy).   It's enjoyable to knit with, and it feels great while knitting - win, win!  Turns out, our current KAL (knit along) is also using Herriot Fine yarn.  The Otono shawl uses three different colors, and is stunning.  Should be a fun KAL-why don't you join us!  Happy Holidays!

Abracadabra by HiKoo

Sew-Steamboat-Abracadabra-CowlWhen Sew Steamboat got Abracadabra yarn by HiKoo, I immediately knew I had to try it.  The yarn, at first, is a cream color; but put it in the sunlight and it turns purple!  (We now have one that turns blue!)   At the same time we received Abracadabra, one partner gave me a really cool cowl pattern that required two different yarns, and another partner gave me some dark purple yarn.  I knew right away that the three would be perfect together, so I started my cowl.  During this time, I made a visit to my daughter in California who has a labradoodle.  Not being used to having a dog, I was remiss in where I put my yarn, and he got hold of a skein of Abracadabra.  It took quite a while to get that skein out of his mouth, so you can imagine how yucky it was.  I rinsed it and left it to dry before continuing on with my cowl.  When it was completed, I brought it to Sit 'N Stitch to show off.  I was so excited to show it off that when the first arrival got there I said, 'Let's go outside so I can show you how this changes colors!'.  Outside she asked why the top part wasn't chang color.  Seems maybe one should not let Abracadabra mix with the saliva of a dog's mouth.  Luckily I had purchased three skeins, so I was able to complete my cowl, after taking out the non-color-changing skein.
