Dear Friends:

It's December! The holiday season is upon us. This is a time to share, give thanks, and enjoy our family and friends. This year, our partners at Sew Steamboat are very pleased to accept non-perishable food items on behalf of the Food Bank. Bring 5 items to enjoy a 15% discount! As usual, we will also accept your gifts (handmade or store bought clothing) for adults and children on behalf of the United Way. Stop in with your donations by Saturday, December 10th.

Happy Holidays to you and your family. See you very soon!

Please note: Sew Steamboat will be closed on Sundays, December 25th and January 1st.

Warm Holiday Wishes:

Blair, Carol, Cho, Cindy, Donna, Lynn, and Nancy

Baltic Braid Cowl in Puna by Amano

Baltic-Braid-Cowl

Sometimes simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. This pattern and this luscious yarn allow the sweet braided detail to speak for itself.  I knitted the Baltic Braid Cowl by Lisa Ellis (available for purchase on Ravelry) in scrumptious Puna by Amano. Puna is a DK weight yarn and its content is baby alpaca, which makes it soft to the touch and gives it a gentle drape. It was a pleasure to knit with, which is good because I decided to learn a new technique, the Baltic Braid. The stitch sort of feels like doing a backstroke; it is worked contrary to most regular stitches and the pattern designer has provided an excellent tutorial on her website which reinforced her clearly written instructions. I'm smitten with this color combination and it might be my go-to gift for folks receiving something handmade by me this year!

Tears and Laughter

Tears and Laughter Shawl - La BourgeiosAs many of you know, one of our partners at Sew Steamboat recently moved away. LA was the organizer of our partnership and the backbone of our shop. When we started the partnership over three years ago, she had the most shop experience, was our primary knitting instructor, and a prolific designer of knitting patterns. To say a proper goodbye (her words), she designed a lovely shawl pattern “Tears and Laughter” for us, her partners at Sew Steamboat and gifted us with the yarn in which to knit the shawl.

I started knitting Tears and Laughter a few weeks ago, and with a little help from Cindy to get started, it has been a breeze. FYI-  put locking stitch markers in the first three stitches.  It is a good pattern to knit while socializing and a great pattern to help you memorize M1L and M1R.

LA was one of my best friends in Steamboat and I miss her a great deal, but I am looking forward to finishing “Tears and Laughter” and to also seeing her again either here in Steamboat, there in North Carolina, or somewhere in between. "Tears and Laughter" was/is the perfect goodbye.
