March Newsletter 2016

01-Mar-2016

Dear Friends:

Like Spring being just around the corner, Sew Steamboat is also going to experience an exciting "change in seasons" so to speak. Our partner, Mariah Poole, has decided to make a life change and attend Law school! Mariah is a wonderful seamstress who enjoys "upcycling" fabric. Transforming them from one use to a completely new life (think wool skirt becoming a bag.) She too will be transforming herself in the coming months.

The remaining partners wish Mariah nothing but the best with her new adventures!! While a departure date hasn't been set as of yet, she would like to invite inquiries, to her personally, regarding selling her share of the business. We are all very proud of our nine-women-owned small business, and we look forward to our next chapter. If you think you are interested, or have any questions, you can contact Mariah directly at mariah@sewsteamboat.com.

As a final note, we will be closed on Easter Sunday to enjoy the holiday with family and friends.

Community Involvement: 4-H Fiber Camps!

For the past 9 years, our local 4-H has offered a Fiber Camp to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in Routt County during Blues Break. It has always been very popular and has evolved into a 2-day camp offering sewing and various fiber arts. This year our partner Lynn volunteered to teach needle felting so she had 2 classes per day with 5 children in each class. They all had fun needle felting a picture on a piece of wool fabric and trying some wet felting by making some colorful wool beads. In addition to felting, the fiber arts students learned to card wool and spin it into yarn on a drop spindle. They then braided their yarn into a bracelet or key chain. The drum carder was a big hit because it allowed them to mix their own unique blend of colorful fiber into a batt that they could use to needle felt or make beads. Such fun!

The sewing day is a great way to introduce children to the sewing machine and all the possibilities that it brings. The children learn how a sewing machine works and what the major parts are called. Practicing sewing on paper without thread helps them get a feel for the pedal and sewing in a straight line which is the major challenge. Sewing a simple felt pincushion gives them a place to store those pesky pins, and then they're ready to sew a pillowcase. With a pillowcase accomplished some went on to sew a simple fleece hat or a cute zippered bag.

We always get a few children every year who go on to sew in a 4-H sewing club, so if you have young ones interested in the fiber arts, keep this camp in mind.

Needle Pointing The Colorado Flag

Sew-Steamboat-Needlepoint-CO-State-FlagBeing a partner of the Sew Steamboat Team has given me a lot of pleasure over the past few years. I love being at the store mainly because of my partners, our customers, and of course, the needle crafts. As a fiber enthusiast and educator, I find myself constantly learning new techniques and sharing with others. Recently, I have been into needlepoint art where I create wall hangings and ornaments. My latest project involves drawing the Colorado State flag on a needlepoint canvas and stitching the flags in many different shades of colors. I find the process very calming and am hoping to share this skill in an upcoming class (see below!) Be sure to pick up the kit and register today!
