October Newsletter 2015

Dear Customer:

The colors outside may be past their peak, but inside we have new colors arriving every day!  We just got in fresh fabric, new yarn and needlepoint kits - all in every hue your heart can desire.

October marks the beginning of the cozy season; a time to knit, crochet and sew things to warm our hearts and ourselves.  We are calling October, "Socktober". Wtih sock knitting classes on the calendar, and lots of lovely sock yarn on the shelf, we hope to teach and inspire. Socks are practical and portable projects and if you've been wanting to learn, or need a refresher, now's the time!

October also marks our shop's anniversary! Visit us on Saturday, October 17th for "I Love Yarn Day" and our shop's recognition of our anniversary. We will have yarn specials and treats.

Knitter's Pride Karbonz DPNS

Knitter's Pride Karbonz Double Pointed Needles

Recently, I was knitting a pair of socks that simply would not stay on the needles I was using.  I had cast on more stitches than I usually do, and I realized longer needles were what I needed. I decided as long as I was going to get a new set of double pointed needles, I would try something completely new. I am so glad I did-Karbonz by Knitter's Pride are my new favorites! With a carbon fiber body and nickle-plated brass tips, they are double pointed needles all grown up, and are a pleasure to have in my hands! I have since expanded my collection of 8 inch dpns to include four sizes, because I know they are my new go-to double points; and I have no plans to stop knitting socks any time soon!

What's On Our Needles: LA Bourgeois

Lang Jawoll Sock YarnJawoll Sock Yarn from Lang

This year, when my nephew, Eric, asked for his socks, I led him over to our wall of sock-weight yarn and he plucked out a skein of the self-striping Lang Jawoll. I hadn't tried it out yet, so I got excited.

I love the color ways of the Jawoll! Combining a ton of colors and stripe widths, each pair of socks become addictive as I knit along to see what the next stripe with bring. To break everything up, the Lang Jawoll comes with a small spool of reinforcing yarn for the heels and toes of your sock. As I worked the heel, I was amazed by how much extra mass the reinforcing yarn added. It helped to create a lovely padded heel which will be perfect to protect his feet as he runs and bikes and hikes and all of those crazy things fourteen-year-old boys do. I added in the reinforcing yarn toe as well.

After finishing his pair, and knowing that my mother (with whom Eric lives) has just enough time to transfer clothes from the washer to the dryer, I knitted up a sock for myself and ran it through the washer and the dryer to see how it fared. Wonderfully, the sock softened into a lovely comfy fabric, and I couldn't detect any shrinkage.

All in all, I'm pleased with my experience with the Lang Jawoll. I'm looking forward to my own pair of socks and, thanks to the reinforcing thread, feel confident that Eric won't wear holes in his socks too quickly.
